Shoulder Pain Chiropractor in Fort Worth, TX
Shoulder pain can make reaching, lifting, training, working and even sleeping uncomfortable. Alpha Performance & Wellness takes an individualized approach to understanding how your shoulder moves, what may be contributing to your symptoms and what type of care may be appropriate.
Depending on your evaluation, care may include chiropractic, mobility, soft-tissue and performance-focused strategies designed around your specific needs.

What Is Shoulder Pain?
Shoulder pain refers to discomfort involving the shoulder region and can affect movement, strength, range of motion, reaching, lifting, training, sleep and everyday activities. The shoulder depends on coordinated movement between several joints and the surrounding muscles and tissues, so discomfort in this area can come from many different sources.
Because the shoulder is one of the most mobile joints in the body, that mobility comes with complexity. Pain here is not one single problem — it can involve muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints, bursae, nerves or, in some cases, structures in the neck. Understanding what may be contributing to your symptoms usually requires an evaluation rather than a guess.
This page is educational and does not diagnose your shoulder pain. An individualized evaluation is needed to understand what may be contributing to your symptoms.
What Can Shoulder Pain Feel Like?
Shoulder symptoms can vary widely from person to person. These examples describe common experiences, but symptoms alone do not establish a diagnosis.
Aching
Sharp discomfort with certain movements
Pain when reaching overhead
Pain when reaching behind the body
Reduced range of motion
Stiffness
Weakness or perceived weakness
Discomfort when lifting
Pain during exercise
Nighttime discomfort
Difficulty sleeping on the affected side
Clicking or popping with discomfort
Upper shoulder tension
What Can Contribute to Shoulder Pain?
Shoulder pain may have multiple potential contributors. There is not always a single root cause, and several factors may interact to produce symptoms.
Why Can Overhead Movement Make the Shoulder Hurt?
Overhead movement requires coordinated motion through the shoulder, the shoulder blade (scapular region), the upper back and the surrounding muscles. When any part of that coordination is limited or the movement demand exceeds current capacity, discomfort can become more noticeable.
Depending on the individual, discomfort may appear during repeated overhead activity or when movement capacity does not match the demands being placed on it. Common examples include pressing weights overhead, throwing, serving, swimming, reaching onto shelves and physical jobs that require working above shoulder height.

This information is educational. Discomfort with overhead movement does not by itself confirm a specific diagnosis such as shoulder impingement.
Shoulder Pain in Athletes and Active Adults
The shoulder is placed under very different demands depending on the activity. Weightlifting, functional fitness, baseball and softball, football, basketball, tennis and pickleball, swimming, golf and combat sports all stress the shoulder in distinct ways — and manual or physical work can create its own repetitive demands.
Different activities place different demands on the shoulder, so understanding how you train, how often and how intensely matters when evaluating shoulder concerns. Alpha works with athletes and active adults at many levels and does not claim partnerships with specific sports teams.
For sports-related shoulder concerns, you may also find our Sports Injuries resource helpful. Sports injuries and shoulder pain are related but not identical — one focuses on the activity context, the other on the shoulder region itself.
Can Neck Problems Contribute to Shoulder Symptoms?
Yes. Symptoms felt around the shoulder can sometimes be influenced by structures in or around the neck, while other shoulder symptoms originate locally in the shoulder itself. The neck and shoulder are closely connected, so discomfort in one region can sometimes be felt in the other.
Symptoms such as radiating discomfort, numbness, tingling, weakness or pain extending into the arm may warrant evaluation to better understand whether the source is the shoulder, the neck or both. Determining the true source is an important part of deciding what care may be appropriate.
Because neck and shoulder symptoms can overlap, our Neck Pain resource may be relevant if your discomfort extends into the upper back, neck or arm.
This information does not diagnose cervical radiculopathy or any specific condition. An evaluation helps clarify the source of your symptoms.
How Can Shoulder Pain Affect Everyday Life?
Shoulder pain is not only an athlete's concern. It can affect everyday tasks that most people never think about until reaching or lifting becomes uncomfortable.
Getting dressed
Reaching overhead
Carrying groceries
Lifting children
Working
Driving
Sleeping
Exercise
Household tasks
Sports
When Should Shoulder Pain Be Evaluated?
Not every minor ache requires treatment, but professional evaluation may be appropriate when shoulder symptoms do the following.
When Does Shoulder Pain Need Urgent Medical Attention?
Some shoulder symptoms should not wait for a routine appointment. Urgent or emergency evaluation may be appropriate for symptoms such as obvious deformity after trauma, suspected fracture or dislocation, severe pain after significant trauma, major sudden swelling, or inability to move the arm after a significant injury.
Seek Urgent or Emergency Medical Attention For:
- •Obvious deformity after trauma
- •Suspected fracture or dislocation
- •Severe pain after significant trauma
- •Major sudden swelling
- •Inability to move the arm after significant injury
- •New or rapidly worsening neurological weakness
- •Loss of sensation following trauma
- •Signs of serious infection
- •Other severe or rapidly worsening symptoms
Possible cardiovascular emergency: Shoulder or arm discomfort occurring with chest pain or pressure, shortness of breath, sweating, nausea or other concerning symptoms could be related to a medical emergency. Seek appropriate emergency medical evaluation immediately — do not wait for a chiropractic appointment.
Can Chiropractic Care Help With Shoulder Pain?
For some musculoskeletal shoulder concerns, chiropractic and movement-focused care may be considered as part of a conservative management plan. Whether it is appropriate depends on the cause, severity, evaluation findings and the individual's needs.
An evaluation may consider shoulder movement, range of motion, strength and function, upper-body movement, neck involvement, shoulder blade movement, training demands, work demands and previous injuries to determine whether this type of care appears appropriate.
Chiropractic care does not treat every cause of shoulder pain. Some conditions may require medical imaging, orthopedic evaluation, rehabilitation or another type of care. An evaluation helps determine what is appropriate for you.

Shoulder Pain Chiropractic FAQs
What can cause shoulder pain?
Shoulder pain can have many potential causes, including muscle tension, tendon irritation, joint factors, repetitive overhead movement, training load, trauma, work demands, previous injury and, in some cases, neck-related factors. Symptoms alone do not establish a diagnosis, so an evaluation is usually needed to understand what may be contributing.
Why does my shoulder hurt when I raise my arm?
Raising your arm overhead requires coordinated motion through the shoulder, shoulder blade, upper back and surrounding muscles. Discomfort can become noticeable when movement capacity does not match the demands being placed on it or when repeated overhead activity stresses the region. An evaluation helps clarify what may be contributing.
Can neck problems cause shoulder symptoms?
Yes. Symptoms felt around the shoulder can sometimes be influenced by structures in or around the neck, while other shoulder symptoms originate locally. Radiating discomfort, numbness, tingling, weakness or pain extending into the arm may warrant evaluation to better understand the source.
Can chiropractic care help every type of shoulder pain?
No. Chiropractic and movement-focused care may be considered for some musculoskeletal shoulder concerns as part of a conservative plan, but it is not appropriate for every cause of shoulder pain. Some conditions may require medical imaging, orthopedic evaluation, rehabilitation or another type of care.
Should I get shoulder pain evaluated after a sports injury?
Professional evaluation may be appropriate when shoulder symptoms persist, worsen, limit movement or interfere with training after an injury. Severe trauma, suspected fracture or dislocation, major instability, significant weakness or other severe symptoms may require urgent or emergency medical attention rather than a routine appointment.
Can Alpha work with athletes who have shoulder pain?
Alpha evaluates movement, mobility, function and sport-specific demands to help guide an individualized approach for athletes and active adults. Return to activity should be based on symptoms, function and clinical guidance — not simply on whether pain has temporarily reduced.
What happens during a shoulder evaluation?
You will discuss when symptoms started, what movements bother the shoulder and how they affect activity. Alpha then assesses relevant shoulder and upper-body movement, discusses the findings and explains whether care appears appropriate or whether additional medical evaluation may be needed.
