    WHAT IS SOFT TISSUE MOBILIZATION?

    Hands-On Manual Therapy, No Instruments

Soft tissue mobilization is a hands-on manual therapy in which your provider applies targeted pressure and movement directly to muscles and the surrounding soft tissues — with no instruments. The focus is on specific areas of tension or restricted movement rather than treating the body as a whole.

Because the work is done by hand, the provider can read how the tissue responds in real time and adjust pressure, angle, and pace on the spot. This focused approach can be one part of a personalized plan built around your individual needs and goals.

    Techniques Used

All hands-on, all without instruments. The technique is chosen based on the area and how the tissue responds.

    Sustained pressure

Firm, held pressure applied to a tight band or tender area to encourage it to release.

    Gliding and friction strokes

Controlled hand movements along or across the muscle to address adhesions and improve glide between layers.

    Active-assisted movement

Pressure combined with gentle movement of the joint or limb to restore range as the tissue releases.

    Stretch and positioning

Lengthening techniques that position the tissue so tension can be addressed where it actually limits movement.

    What It Feels Like

Most people describe firm, broad pressure and stretching rather than pain. The provider adjusts throughout based on your feedback.

    • Broad, sustained pressure and a stretching sensation as the provider works along the muscle — not the focused friction of an instrument.
    • Tight or sensitive areas may feel tender or "good-sore," and the provider eases off or shifts angle based on what you report.
    • Because the hands read the tissue as they work, pressure stays responsive — there is no fixed tool edge to work around.
    • Afterward, the treated area often feels looser or warmer, with little to no lingering redness.

    Common Areas Treated

Soft tissue mobilization is often used on larger muscle groups where general tension and tightness build up.

    • Neck and upper traps
    • Shoulders and shoulder blades
    • Mid and lower back
    • Hips and glutes
    • Hamstrings and quads
    • Calves

    Who May Benefit?

Soft tissue mobilization can be a useful addition to care for many people, especially those focused on movement, tension and recovery.

    Athletes
    Active adults
    People experiencing muscle tightness
    People with movement restrictions
People incorporating recovery into their routine

    Potential Benefits

Soft tissue mobilization may support how your body feels and moves. Responses vary by individual, and benefits are never guaranteed.

    • May help reduce muscle tension
    • May support range of motion
    • May complement recovery
    • May complement chiropractic care

Muscle Scraping vs. Soft Tissue Mobilization

Both target restricted soft tissue, but the way they get there — and what they feel like — is different. Here is how this hands-on appointment compares to our instrument-assisted muscle scraping.

    Factor
    Soft Tissue Mobilization
    Muscle Scraping
    Method
Hands-on manual therapy — the provider's hands apply pressure and movement directly, with no instruments.
Instrument-assisted — a specialized tool glides over tissue to detect and address restriction.
    Sensation
Broad, sustained pressure and stretching; usually firm but comfortable, with little to no lingering redness.
Focused, friction-like scraping; temporary redness is common and expected.
    Best suited for
General muscle tension, tightness, and movement restriction across a broader area.
Dense, fibrous, or chronically restricted tissue from repetitive load and overuse.
