    WHAT IS MUSCLE SCRAPING (IASTM)?

    Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Work

Muscle scraping — also known as Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization, or IASTM — is an instrument-assisted technique in which Dr. Jalen uses a specialized tool to work on soft tissue. The smooth, beveled edge of the instrument lets him detect and address areas of restriction that are harder to feel with the hands alone.

By gliding the tool across muscle and fascia, the goal is to help restricted tissue move more freely and support the body's natural recovery response in the areas that feel tight, dense, or overworked.

    What the Tool Does

The instrument acts as an extension of the provider's hands. Its contoured edge follows the shape of muscles, tendons, and ligaments, which allows for more precise contact than manual pressure alone. As it moves across the tissue, it can highlight spots that feel dense or "grabbed" — areas that may benefit from focused work.

The scraping motion is intended to create controlled, localized stress in the tissue. That stimulus is thought to support blood flow and the remodeling of tissue that has become restricted from repetitive use, training load, or limited recovery.

    What It Feels Like

Most people describe a firm, scraping or friction sensation rather than pain. Pressure is adjusted to your comfort.

    • A firm, gliding friction over the skin — often described as a "scraping" or "sanding" sensation, not a deep, digging pressure.
    • Tight or restricted areas may feel more intense or tender than healthy tissue, which helps guide where the work is focused.
    • Temporary redness or mild bruising in the treated area is normal and typically fades within a few days — it is not the goal of the treatment, just a common response.
    • Pressure and pace are adjusted throughout the session based on your feedback, so the treatment stays as comfortable as possible.

    Common Areas Treated

Muscle scraping is often used on areas that take repetitive load or develop dense, restricted tissue over time.

    • Forearms and elbows (golfers, tennis players, grip-heavy work)
    • Calves and Achilles (runners and field-sport athletes)
    • Shoulders and upper back
    • Neck and traps
    • Quads, hamstrings, and IT band
    • Plantar surface of the foot

    Who May Benefit?

Muscle scraping can be a useful addition to care for people whose tissue feels dense, restricted, or overworked from repetitive demand.

    Athletes with repetitive training load
    Runners and field-sport athletes
    People with dense, restricted tissue
    People recovering from overuse
    People focused on tissue recovery
    People receiving chiropractic care

Muscle Scraping vs. Soft Tissue Mobilization

Both work on restricted soft tissue, but they get there differently. Here is how muscle scraping compares to our hands-on soft tissue mobilization appointment.

    Factor
    Muscle Scraping
    Soft Tissue Mobilization
    Method
Instrument-assisted — a specialized tool glides across tissue to detect and address restriction.
Hands-on manual therapy — pressure and movement applied directly with the provider's hands, no instruments.
    Sensation
Firm, friction-like scraping; temporary redness is common and normal.
Broad, sustained pressure and stretching; usually described as firm but comfortable.
    Best suited for
Dense, fibrous, or chronically restricted tissue from repetitive load and overuse.
General muscle tension, tightness, and movement restriction across a broader area.

Not sure which fits? Dr. Jalen can help you choose based on how your tissue feels and what you're trying to accomplish. Learn about soft tissue mobilization.
